Our next destination was Florence. The small and stuffy train station turned out to be characteristic of this cozy little city.
First we had to check out the Il Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore. Then we moved on to the Ponte Vecchio, and saw all the beautiful jewelry we couldn't afford. We had dinner on the south side of Florence and then took some more pictures of Ponte Vecchio on the way back to our hostel.

Our hostel was located just a few blocks away from the train station and our room had constant traffic going by. So, our two older roommates, French Simon and Minnesotan David, had a long argument about whether it would be better to leave the windows open at night and try to sleep through the noise but be cool, or to close the windows and let shut out the noise but suffocate of the heat. The original decision went to the man who argued against noise, but by the time we woke up, the window was wide open.

The following day we dedicated to walking about and seeing pretty much nothing. We bought tickets to the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Galleria della Accademia avoiding the time consuming lines. Then we toured the streets for the rest of the day taking pictures of random places.

We ate a lot of gelatto, in cute squares in front of closed churches.

We walked along the Armo river and admired the many elite bars we could neither get into, nor had the desire to get into, along with the river scenery.

And, of course, we peeped into windows and courtyards.

On our last full day in Florence we went to the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Galleria della Accademia. On our way to the Uffizi we witnessed a part of a city festival. The people participating were dressed in medieval clothes and had a soccer match in one of the city squares.

We had dinner at the most amazing restaurant called Zaza's. David was addressed there as "Mr. David" which was rather amusing when you think about how we must have looked in this somewhat posh restaurant in our jeans and dirty t-shirts.
